Commander Jayne Patterson ordered everyone to keep their Vacuum-Suits sealed. Her five person search party would debark from the shuttle craft and enter the CDC building for information. The fact that they lost contact with earth 42 years ago was as unnerving as the fact that there was not a living human in sight anywhere in Atlanta! In fact, the human skeletons they saw here and there had long since been either stripped of their flesh, or simply desiccated by the weather... right down to the bones. These bones were as dusty and dry as the concrete they lay upon.
Eventually, they made their way to the command center. Officer Barton used his communication skills to open the diary recordings of CDC director, Doctor Sarah Barton, his sister. It was inside her private messages addressed to him, the ones she never got to transmit to him, that he found all of the disturbing answers to the questions he did not want to find.
And, he found the profound passage titled:

...The beginning of the end of civilization began the day science became confused by religion!
It was the men of religion who claimed that God would heal the sick and the dying of the disease!
It was the scientists who warned that science offered the cures... but, religion won the argument!
Eventually the humans died, for it was too late when all of the scientists, like me, succumbed!...
